COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office Academy Bureau, Suffolk County New York will be conducting a Basic Course for Peace Officer and Peace Officer with Firearms in October 2008.  This training is open to all peace officers in New York State.

The basic program is eight (8) days long;  October 6, 7,8,14,15,16,23,24,2008.  Firearms certifiction entails an additional seven (7) days:  October 20, 21, and November 307, 2008.

All classes will be held either at the S.C.S.O. Academy Bureau West, in Brentwood, NY or the S.C.S.O. Academy Bureau East, in Westhampton, NY.

Agencies should have their training coordinators send a written correspondence, on agency letterhead, to the Chief of Staff's Office, Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, 100 Center Drive, Riverhead, NY 11901.  Pleae include the number of spots you are requesting.  Upon approval, you will then be contacted by the Academy Bureau to start the enrollment process.

All applicants must be listed on the New York State Peace Officer Registry PRIOR to staring any courses.

Applicants seeking firearms certifiction must either:  (1) N.Y.S. C.P.L. section 400 execmpt or: (2) currently posses a valid pistol license and, pursuant to their special duties and responsibilities, be specifically endoresed for such possession or carry by their sponsoring agency.  Such will be verified by the Academy upon application.  A photocopy of all licenses will be retained by the Academy.

Although space in our classes is limited, we will try to accommodate all applications.  However, there is always the chance of having greater applicants than space available.  If your agency is denied an application, you will be given priority for the next class.

The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services periodically trains police officers in
designated IMPACT counties and surrounding areas to achieve and sustain long term crime
reduction. In a cooperative effort between the Division and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
there will be a series of one-day “Extremist Hate Group” Seminars. This training is designed
primarily for police officers, correction officers and community corrections personnel.
This course presents an overview of hate crimes from the legal perspective. The presenters will
include ADL’s Northeastern Investigative Researcher and Eastern States Civil Rights Counsel.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This training provides officers a basic understanding of the issues of prescription drug abuse and the growing problem of drug diversion cases.  This course trains officers when to use penal law or alternatively, the public health law when dealing with pharmaceutical drug diversion.  Topics also include the prescription monitoring program in NYS, identifying prescription forgeries, and security features in the NYS Official Prescription.  Officers learn about techniques and targets of drug diverters, doctor shoppers and illegal prescribing by practitioners.  Other topics include drug facilitated sexual assault, institutional diversion and confidentiality requirements.
